“Whether you want to uncover the secrets of the universe, or you want to pursue a career in the 21st century, basic computer programming is an essential skill to learn.” Steven Hawking.
What is Computing?
In computing, pupils are taught the principles of information and computation, how digital systems work, how to use them and how to use this knowledge through programming.
Computing at Cockton Hill Junior School:
Computing at Cockton Hill Junior School focuses on the three strands of Computing learning: digital literacy, programming and ICT. Children learn to recognise the risks and benefits of being a user of the internet and how to keep themselves safe. We closely align our practice through the use of the 360 safe tool to cover strands from Education for a Connected World. Programming helps to develop computational thinking and allows them to problem solve. They learn through the PRIMM principles of Predicting, Running code, Investigating, Modifying and Making their own programs. They use Scratch, Flowol and Microbits to develop their programming abilities. Finally, they use a range of popular programs and software to develop creative tasks such as film making, digital art and to become familiar with a range of office programs.
School leaders are currently updating planning overviews in line with the changes to our curriculum. Please contact school if you require further information about this curriculum area.
