About Our School

Cockton Hill Junior School is a large school situated on the same site as its partner Infant School in the centre of the town of Bishop Auckland, South West of the County of Durham. Bishop Auckland is an historic market town with a 2,000 year heritage located in a semi rural setting. We are within close travelling distance of Durham City and Darlington and make frequent use of amenities as a learning resource.

The two schools are managed separately however, the teams work closely together to ensure continuity of education for all pupils. Pupils from the Infant School transfer to the Junior School at the end of year two – a short journey across the playground! We work together to provide a transition programme to support a smooth move from infant to junior.

The school has a long history dating back 110 years. We reside in a beautiful Edwardian building with spacious areas for additional teaching and learning zones as well as extra classrooms. We have extensive grounds including a school garden and have a large field used for sports events and summer time events and play. We enjoy the beauty of our local rural environment to enhance learning.

All classrooms have the latest technologies installed to deliver top class learning opportunities. We provide an exciting curriculum addressing local, national and international issues which works to prepare and equip pupils with the knowledge and skills needed in their life now and as they move onto new schools when they leave us. We believe in widening our children’s experiences through out of school visits and residentials. We also enjoy a range of visitors from the local community and beyond into school to help us understand more about the world we live in.

Our Ofsted inspection in April 2017 confirmed that we are a ‘good’ school and surveys show that our children enjoy school life, in particular the variety of activities on offer both during and after school. We have a strong ratio of staff to pupils and this ensures we can meet the needs of all our pupils and support them to achieve their absolute best. We recognise the interest and talents of individuals and encourage and celebrate their achievements, to follow our school motto of ‘Being The Best We Can Be’. We work closely with parents and carers and believe that together we can make good provision for children in our care.

The safety of our children is a high priority. We work closely with parents and carers to ensure all children are very well cared for and protected in safe and secure surroundings, both on and off school premises. We have security systems which safeguard all school members.

Our school is a very exciting and busy place to be. We welcome the support of the local community and encourage parents and carers to participate in their children’s learning. If you would like to help or take part in adult learning opportunities, please do not hesitate to contact me at the school office.
